P.J. Wallace Cycles and Trophies
Although P.J. Wallace Cycles and Trophies have witnessed many changes in Clane throughout the past 70+ years, Wallace's shop remains almost identical to the day of its original opening.
The bicycle business itself has also experienced many changes during this time and Wallace's pride themselves on their ability to keep their range current and fashionable. The most popular items at the moment are
A BIKE IS NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS
Another significant change in the business is the decline in popularity of bikes as traditional Christmas gifts.
These days there can be little doubt that gifts such as mobile phones, tablets, and games consoles appear more frequently than bicycles on letters to Santa Claus from children in the local area.
This change hasn't dramatically affected Wallace's business however, John Delaney has noticed that bikes have become more popular as birthday gifts and now sell at a steadier rate all year round.
A WINNING FORMULA
Throughout this time John Delaney believes that remaining successful is due to some business practices and principles he feels set them apart from their competitors, including;
And The Winner Is...
The other side of Wallace's business focuses on sales, design and engraving trophies and medals. Wallace's keep their entire range of trophy stock on-site and engravings are done in house
This policy means that Wallace's customers may leave the shop with their new trophy in hand, complete with any ribbons or accessories in just one visit.
P.J. Wallace Cycles and Trophies provide trophies, cups, shields and crystal for every occasion, including;
- All Sporting Events
- Graduations
- Driving
- Singing
- Dancing
- Drama
In addition to these popular activities, P.J. Wallace Cycles and Trophies also make specialist trophies to order.
A History Steeped in Tradition
1945
Our Doors Open
P.J. Wallace Cycles and Trophies is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) shops on Clane's Main Street. We are also the oldest bicycle shop in Kildare, and possibly Leinster (outside of Dublin).
It's doors were first opened for business in 1945 by Peter Wallace who sold and repaired the most popular bikes of the era, including Triumph Shoppers and High Nellies.
In subsequent years Peter was joined by his son, Peter Junior (P.J.) who eventually took the reigns of the business from his father.
1979
A New Dimension
Beginning in the 1970's P.J. Wallace was a referee with the Leinster Junior League and was often approached by soccer clubs wishing to buy trophies locally instead of having to travel to Dublin for them.
In 1979 P.J. began making and selling trophies to meet the demand, adding a whole new dimension to his business.
1981
Expanding The Team
In 1981, P.J. decided that he needed some assistance in order to keep the shop running smoothly.
He employed the services of a local school-boy, (a then 12 year old) John Delaney, on a part time basis.
John had expressed a keen interest in trophy making from an early age and was already familiar with bicycles arising from his family relationship to 'Delaney's Bikes' in Harold's Cross.
1987
More Than Just A Job
John finished school in 1987 to begin working at Wallace's on a full time basis and he has never looked back.
John has remained with P.J. Wallace Cycles and Trophies to this day.
2009
In Good Hands
Following the sad death of P.J. in 2009, John and Siobhan assumed the running of the business for PJ's wife and eventually went on to take over the business in 2013.
2017
